Facilitator

I am a facilitator for complex, emergent, justice-oriented group processes. Drawing on my experience as a teacher, organizer, and writer, I help groups and individuals co-create and implement resources and processes that allow us to learn, grow, and do the critical work of our time.

Helping the MA Youth Climate Coalition update its rules to center all youth voices, especially those with marginalized identities.
I facilitate by helping groups to…
  • articulate and embody a core purpose: Mission, Vision, Values, Justice Goals, etc.
  • articulate and enact core processes: Rules, Roles, Communication, Decision-Making, etc.
  • build and conduct effective meetings, especially the design and use of agendas
  • create systems to organize complex events and campaigns: Membership Trackers, Advocacy Day Meeting Grids, Campaign Timelines, Event Run of Shows, etc.
  • name, navigate, harness tension and conflict; repair harm—especially across age and other differences
  • build systems and culture that welcome young people and other newcomers
Places I facilitate…
  • Massachusetts Youth Climate Coalition—Adult Administrator, co-founder: build and nurture membership, assist in organizing events, maintain digital resources, resolve conflict, and update, embody, and guide members on their Rules & Processes
  • Clean Water’s Youth Action Collaborative—Youth Program & Coalition Co-Manager: help their Youth Action Collaborative members to design and execute effective local projects in collaboration with the community and decision-makers
  • Heart-to-Heart—Facilitator of Earth Circle: develop and co-facilitate a radical listening program and practice space for anyone concerned about our relationship to and treatment of the Earth; draws on practices from Nonviolent Communication and the Center for Courage & Renewal
  • Energy Allies/Solar United Neighbors—Energy Justice Educator: develop and then facilitate an energy justice curriculum for organizers and other nonprofit workers to incorporate principles of energy justice into their work
Places I facilitate…

  • the mundane—Membership Trackers, Advocacy Day Meeting Grids, Campaign Timelines, Meeting Agendas.
  • critical JEDI (Justice Equity Diversity Inclusion) practices—active Land and Labor Acknowledgments, adaptations of Tema Okun’s White Supremacy Culture and its antidotes, adaptation of Nonviolent Communication and Conscious Leadership principles for climate justice
  • values statements that help us hold core tensions/conflicts in our work such as the tension between upholding all youth voices in an adultist world and also realizing that not all youth experience the same climate impacts nor are they equally resourced to do the work (see excerpt from MYCC Rules & Processes)

Since the Fall of 2023, I also contracted with the nonprofit Energy Allies to lead the development of a 5-part curriculum on Energy Justice for a wide range of stakeholders: nonprofit workers in the climate justice field, nonprofit workers in other justice fields, and interested citizens without professional experience. I will be implementing this curriculum as the lead facilitator in the coming years with deep care, research, and genuine relationships with stakeholders to ensure that this resource integrates thoughtfully with the wisdom that already exists in the places we bring it.

I love all aspects of the work of co-learning about climate justice, whether it be curriculum design, teaching, facilitating, training, or consulting. If you think I’d be a fit for a project you’re working on, consider reaching out to me with a proposal.
